INVESTMENT AND IMPACT CALCULATOR · GUIDE ONLY
Two steps, about ten minutes. Add up council’s investment, then fill in what you know across four pillars. Leave blank what you don’t: the gaps are part of the answer.
Enter one total, or ask each department to add its share.
Each department adds its figures, then sends the link to the next. Figures travel only in the link and are not stored on our website.
Four pillars, 14 recognised indicators. Fill in what you have. Gaps show where measurement could go further.
No visitor survey for this event? Fill spend with Tourism Research Australia averages:
{{traNote}}
Guide only, for illustrative purposes. Results are indicative and depend entirely on the figures entered. Defensible results need further, region-specific analysis. Survey results are marked robust (385 or more responses), indicative (fewer) or sample not given. Net direct spend is shown relative to all event funding, not attributed to council alone, and is not a financial return to council.

HOW IT’S CALCULATED
Guide only. This tool is for illustrative purposes. Its results are indicative and are not a substitute for a region-specific impact assessment, which is needed for defensible results.
Economic, social and environmental: informed by the nine core indicators in the OECD’s 2023 guides on measuring the impact of culture, sports and business events, plus its pride-in-place indicator. Economic benefit counts only spending that is new to the region and caused by the event. It excludes tickets paid to the organiser to avoid double counting, uses net organiser spend, allows for leakage, separates day, domestic overnight and international visitors, and reports direct impact only, with no multipliers. Where no event survey exists, spend can be filled with Tourism Research Australia averages from its Domestic Tourism Statistics; results are then marked estimated.
Cultural: the five measurable cultural outcomes developed by the Cultural Development Network Ltd in partnership with the National Local Government Cultural Forum, used under licence and unchanged.
Social, environmental and cultural results are reported in their own units, not converted to dollars. Results depend entirely on the figures you enter and are indicative. This tool is not endorsed by the OECD or the Cultural Development Network.
